What does the soul want of me?
Many people who come to see me are asking what their soul wants, even if they don't use that exact language. They often seek help due to shifts in their job, marriage, or relationships. Sometimes, they face a medical diagnosis, experience loss, or find their coping skills no longer effective, leading to feelings of depression or heightened anxiety. No longer having solid ground, we start searching for answers. We all reach a point where we sense parts of our lives fading, leaving us wondering about what comes next. Everyone who has some self-awareness will step into this transitional space. This transitional space can be uncomfortable and may last for an extended period. In this space, we start to question ourselves and feel overwhelmed, anxious, grief-stricken, or falling. Starting therapy in these moments is an excellent idea.
For example, a man came in when his work life fell apart. He had been put on leave and was under suspicion, consumed by fear, shame, and sorrow. I helped him calm his nervous system with a cranial touch, which helped the nervous system find a still point, and explored what was causing the distress. By paying attention to his body sensations and holding patterns, he gained insight into the issues he had carried from childhood into this job. His need to be the center of attention and the one with the answers was how his ego had been fed. Yet behind the scenes, he was losing faith in his abilities and had strayed away from why he felt called to this profession. The calling had touched his soul, and the current job kept him locked in a battle, with his ego and reputation being his central focus and not the meaning behind his work. The job required him to show up in a way where he ultimately became a version of himself he didn't like. Patterns from childhood kept him stuck in this occupation. Ultimately, he understood the reasons behind his dismissal and felt grateful for it. A new plan unfolded for him; his path shifted to something more aligned with his true self. The more adult version of who he wants to be was uncovered, and his soul started to be fed and recognized.
This passage from the death of a part of ourselves to rebirth is possible, and this therapy can help. Through touch, imagery, noticing sensations, and questions that lead to awareness, Somatic therapy can help one reconnect with one's soul.
