Elections and Your Nervous System
If you feel unaffected by the recent presidential election, consider yourself fortunate. Many of my clients, regardless of their political affiliations, have invested significant time, energy, and resources into the election and are now experiencing a wide range of emotions. Their responses vary from hopelessness, anger, and grief to relief and uncertainty.
Grief is a process that can impact our physiology, particularly our access to the prefrontal cortex, which is involved in decision-making. Accept that during this time, you may struggle with making simple decisions, feel fatigued, and find it harder to muster motivation for everyday activities. Additionally, past experiences stored in your nervous system can amplify what you are currently feeling, making those emotions more overwhelming. It’s important to recognize that you have felt similar emotions in the past, and this current experience is connected to that.
In my practice, I help clients untangle and acknowledge each experience individually so that we can address each sensation effectively. I encourage clients to connect with the parts of themselves that hold resilience, calmness, and a sense of grounding. Using cranial sacral touch or possibly massage bringing someone back to a safe nuetral space is doable.
If you find that you need extra support during this time, I recommend seeking a neutral therapist—someone who does not let their personal opinions or political beliefs influence the therapeutic space. A neutral somatic therapist can help you focus on the bodily sensations you are experiencing and guide you in shifting those feelings without adding confusion to the process.
