Is Somatic Therapy for Everyone?

The answer to the title is nope.

Somatic therapy has gained significant popularity, with Bessel Van Der Kolk, Peter Levine, and other Somatic experts becoming more popular. A mind-body connection must occur to heal long-held nervous system wounds. Thousands of mind-body practices can bring healing, but my specialty is Somatic psychotherapy.

As a seasoned Somatic therapist, I understand this approach is not for everyone, but the healing potential is immense for those open to it.

I require clients to be willing and able to hold uncomfortable sensations for a short period. These sensations are often related to patterns in our body's response to overwhelm, which we can trace back to past experiences. These patterns, called 'nervous system patterns,' can lead to the reactivation and sensation of old emotional wounds. Tapping into these spaces is not easy, but with the correct level of safety, it is possible.

While clients may initially focus on a specific area they wish to address, like ruminating thinking, the therapy process is flexible. Depending on the individual's journey, the root of a troubling thought or dysfunctional behavior may surface first or later. There may be reasons why the coping skill of ruminating thinking came to be initially that need to be addressed first. Once patterns are recognized on a visceral level, clients will help make a different choice in real-time more easily.

Embarking on the journey of Somatic therapy requires a level of bravery and dedication to healing. It demands a willingness to embrace vulnerability to create the life you desire.
