Old Patterns Need Mindfulness

I am tired and overwhelmed, finding life hard. I have handled lots of pieces of the pandemic, the political situation, the violence, and rage in our culture with distance, but today I am done.

I watched a video of three protesters screaming at an elderly lady with a walker and her husband as they tried to cross the street.

They kept calling her a Nazi and telling her to go home while aggressively blocking her path.

These young people are acting from their basic animal instincts and allowing that drive to lead their behaviors.

I, too, have spiraled into old patterns of behavior outside of my office, trying to find control in chaos, not yelling at strangers but in my self-destructive way.

The decisions that come from this place where my nervous system reigns my thoughts are not the best for anyone involved.

One way I shift this nervous system pattern is to remain mindful of my present moment.

Early in the morning, when my puppy gets me up before the rest of the house, I take him outside and throw a ball.

I notice the coolness of the air before it becomes hot and watch a hawk as he sits on top of a large tree in the neighboring yard, and I breathe deeply.

What has popped up for you during this season of the pandemic?

Are you functioning from a place of fear, anger, grief, and reverting to old behaviors?

There is a lot that is hard right now.

Try spending five minutes today or longer immersed in the activity you are doing.

Staying present to the current moment is the first step to finding peace away from the chaos.

Somatic psychotherapy helps teach us how to relax amid fear and breathe into our realities.
