Moving out of Crisis

I have had several people reach out lately in crisis, and they first want to know how I can help them not feel what they are feeling. Because they are dysregulated and not coping well, they want the promise of never feeling this way, whatever that may be again. I cannot promise anyone that spending time with me will stop certain feelings; never feeling a specific thing again is a losing strategy.

When a crisis occurs, the most important thing is to remind the body that it knows places of safety and grounding. As a therapist, I play a crucial role in providing a safe space for clients to sit across from me or lie on the table, guiding them in remembering moments of safety and strength. This safe space is where we can work together to shift the nervous system pattern that's hijacking their stability. It's a place where clients can reorient themselves to the present moment, with the added support of gentle touch, cranial sacral touch, and small movement exercises if needed. This process, which takes only a few moments, can help shift whatever nervous system pattern is hijacking their stability. From here, it depends on the client how long we must stay in this space before digging into what triggered it. There are several ways to get out of the crisis point, and once attained, small goals can be added to help with stabilization once a client leaves and until the next session. Clients can come in several times a week or add a full day of therapy initially to be calmer and have more skills added quickly.

It's important to remember that there is hope in crisis, and tools are available to help navigate these challenging times. These tools, combined with the support of a therapist, can empower you to bring yourself out of states of overwhelm and into a place of resilience. However, it's crucial to understand that there is never a promise of never feeling something again. Such a promise sets us up for failure and can encourage a repeat of nervous system dysregulation. Instead, we can focus on how to bring ourselves out of these states of overwhelm and into a place of resilience.

Consultations are always free and can be done remotely or in person.
