Swallowed by Medical Mysteries

I have seen more people with chronic pain conditions this past year—the type of person with multiple physical issues, leaving doctors perplexed.

I do not take working with these clients lightly. It is very challenging work.

The multiple layers of triggers in their nervous systems must be dealt with carefully, or the nervous system will become overwhelmed in session.

The triggers include verbal or body language, tone, or physical distance.

All of the clients who come to me in this state have an element of feeling unsafe in their nervous systems, whether they are aware of it or not.

Safety in therapy is paramount when working with these clients in person or remotely.

Usually, their history is full of reasons to feel unsafe even from newborn age, but because this is their story and life, the connection is never made that their childhood was more difficult than most.

Allowing them to recognize this takes care and must be conveyed with deep empathy and respect.

These clients think of themselves as more fragile, emotional, and vulnerable than other people when the opposite is their truth.

Their ability to manage the unsafe nervous system for decades translates into their bodies as a physical dysfunction or ailment. The fact that they are still here is fantastic.

Still, the medical profession and others have labeled them negatively because of their mysterious symptoms.

Success is never guaranteed in any therapy; it takes more time with these types of issues to see the healing process occur, but it does and can.

If you or someone you know struggles with physical challenges and being mislabeled and not understood by the medical community, Somatic psychotherapy is an avenue worth exploring.

All consultations in person or remote are free.
